Featured Artist – Joy Oladokun
A musician Id like to feature is Folk-Pop, R&B singer, and songwriter Joy Oladokun. I know Joy may not be new to some of you, but I’m a tad late to the party and they’re a fairly new discovery for me.
I recently learned about Oladokun’s music from their recent 2022 GLADD media awards nomination for Outstanding Breakthrough Artist.
After listening to their latest single Keeping the Light On, I immediately searched the rest of their discography.
I listened to a few singles and Joy’s first album, Carry, but was really taken back by In Defense of My Own Happiness.
The album just felt so… Honest. Joy shares some personal truths and experiences about being raised and surrounded by conservative/religious beliefs, the pandemic, politics, being vulnerable, learning to be happy, and accepting herself as a queer black woman.
Seeing all the recognition Joy has gotten about the album and having her songs featured on The L word, This is Us and Grey’s Anatomy is very much deserved, and I can’t wait to see what comes next for her.
Joy Oladokun is currently on her first headlining tour. You can find a list of dates below and you can listen to In Defense of My Own Happiness plus some of Joy’s other releases right here.
