FLOOD debuts Bad Bad Hats new single “Bored in The Summer”
Minneapolis’ indie rock heroes Bad Bad Hats will release their brand new self-titled album this Friday, April 12 on Don Giovanni Records. The album has earned acclaim spanning Stereogum, PASTE, Women That Rock, BrooklynVegan, RacketMN, Glide Magazine and more. Today, FLOOD Magazine debuts the band’s final album preview track “Bored In The Summer”. Harkening back to their early GarageBand days, the song muses on the passing of time. Kerry Alexander shares, “When Bad Bad Hats first began, I used to demo out all our songs in Garageband. I love going through all the keyboard sounds and drum loops (Edgy Drums 3!) and building a track. But as the band progressed, I got away from this process in lieu of figuring it all out live in the studio with the band and our producer. “Bored in the Summer” marked my return to Garageband. It was gratifying to know I could still do it. We kept some of my Garageband keyboard parts for the final version, but we amped up the arrangement with Chris and Con’s energetic bass and drum parts and the addition of a key change. It brings a certain levity to the chorus that we love.”
Self-producing for the first time, Bad Bad Hats is a freewheeling and fully authentic expression of the band’s classic sound. This time they took their creativity to a new level with a little help from their mighty fanbase. In the Fall of 2020, songwriter Kerry Alexander (guitar/vocals) and Chris Hoge (guitar/bass) collected prompts from their active Patreon fanbase, writing one-off songs based on the requests. The untraditional process challenged the band to write songs of country, pop punk, surf rock, disco, and countless other genres and provided a joyful freedom to collaborate on new music during an otherwise very hard time.
Masters of simplicity, the band pairs unshakeable pop hooks with classic indie sounds and several unexpectedly funky turns. Their unique combination of up-beat and heartfelt songwriting has earned Bad Bad Hats acclaim from fans, critics and fellow artists. The latter of which have earned invitations to tour with peers like The Beths and Hippo Campus as well as storied acts like The Front Bottoms, Third Eye Blind and Michelle Branch, who picked them up for her 2022 headlining world tour. Bad Bad Hats will hit the road once again this Spring!
