Samia NPR Tiny Desk Concert
“Samia’s set provides a stunning showcase for her charisma, vocal talent and deftly detailed lyricism… She possesses a remarkable knack for specificity in her songwriting, which finds her name-dropping her favorite bands, recounting conversations in devastating detail and even shining a light on songwriting itself.” – NPR
In late September, Samia and her band visited the NPR offices for what would be Bob Boilen’s last Tiny Desk Concert before his retirement, giving him a warm send off with tender performances of “Is There Something In The Movies?,” “Big Wheel,” “Winnebago,” “Triptych,” and “Pool” which are now viewable HERE.
Samia shares: “It’s been a dream of mine to play an NPR Tiny Desk since I started writing songs. Finally doing it would have been surreal enough, but when I found out we’d be the last one of Bob [Boilen’s] tenure, it felt impossibly special. Bob & NPR have built the most honest and beautiful series out of such a respectably genuine love of music; it was an honor to take part. Bob, we’ll miss you.”
Honey, the beloved sophomore album from Samia was released earlier this year via Grand Jury, and saw Samia and her band tour extensively throughout 2023, playing to ever-increasing crowds, most recently supporting Noah Kahan and boygenius, along with a notable appearance at All Things Go Festival at the famed Merriweather Post Pavilion.
Samia continuously seeks out opportunities to foster musical community through collaborative projects, and 2023 also saw the Honey Reimagined series of single releases, featuring a variety of artists such as Blondshell, Maya Hawke, Hovvdy, and Ruston Kelly reinterpreting songs from Honey.
Over the summer, Samia performed at Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco and documented her experience for a Tour Diary with Interview Magazine, spoke with W Magazine for a New Faces feature, and graced the covers of Emmie Magazine and Lucid Magazine. Earlier this year, Samia performed “Dream Song” for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert‘s #LateShowMeMusic, spoke with V Magazine for a feature, and shared covers of “Maps” originally by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and “Country” originally by Porches. Samia also stopped by KEXP for a performance session and shared the video for “Amelia” filmed by Muriel Margaret, showing Samia’s band performing to packed houses of ecstatic fans singing along to every word. The song is named for Amelia Meath from Sylvan Esso, who along with bandmate Nick Sanborn, runs Betty’s, the North Carolina studio where Honey was recorded.
